OPINION: ‘Where were you during the clean-up?’

Visitors to the coast come to swim in the sea and tan on our beaches and not to look at the wild strelitzia.

DEAR Editor,-

The Sunwich Port community had a meeting about a clean-up of the area and we asked people to donate time or money to help to make our village beautiful. Where was ‘Alarmed’? (SCH Letter to the editor Dec 4) – In an easy chair in front of the TV?

About five percent of the people in Sunwich Port came forward with donations and help and the rest sat back and watched. And you have the audacity to complain in the Herald. We took 260 bags of rubbish out of a 100m of bush along the railway line. There were basins, pipes, toilets and plastic chairs and you did not fill one bag.

Visitors to the coast come to swim in the sea and tan on our beaches and not to look at the wild strelitzia – they do grow in other parts of South Africa. We also wanted to clean up the undergrowth along the beach to make it safe for people on the beach, plus they can have nice shady places under trees. Maybe you should move to the Amazon – just a thought. Why not put your name instead of a nom de plume? My name is Arthur Matthee and my contact details are 083 3174550.
