OPINION: ‘Clean audit eclipsed by parties’

In reality, it should only be news when a clean audit is not achieved and not when one is.

DEAR Editor,-

So municipalities in the Ugu district managed to get clean audits? Quite an achievement after being plagued by poor service delivery for many years. The optimist in me says it is thanks to prudent financial management, but the cynic says it is because there are local government elections on the horizon in 2016.

And just as I was about to congratulate the local authorities, I read about all the parties, lunches and events that have been held to celebrate, what is, after all, just doing their jobs. Why spoil it all by wasting ratepayers’ money.

In reality, it should only be news when a clean audit is not achieved and not when one is. It is a sad reflection that in this country where corruption, nepotism and irregular expenditure is the norm – we celebrate mediocrity.
