DEAR Editor,-
The picture of the SPCA road (off Quarry Road) printed in the SCH January 21 refers. Unfortunately it does no justice to the true state of that dismal piece of potholed tar. In mid-2015, in an effort to be a bit proactive, I visited the maintenance department depot in the same road and sought out the responsible supervisor. I was told that the road could not be resurfaced as there was no budget allowance for the task, but that the potholes would be fixed.
About a week later a crew turned the many small, but deep holes into the usual large, square shallow holes, which we all know. And there the action stopped. No one has ever come by to put bags of ready-mix tar into the one inch deep squares. The result over the subsequent months has been the growth of bigger, wider, deeper holes, until now it is a jigsaw puzzle drive. I can’t imagine who thought that having shallow squares filled with tar would withstand the weight and tyre tread of the many trucks trundling up and down the road each day – and the utility trenching done during 2015 has left the right hand verge in a deplorable state.
Clearly the work schedule of the team who make the squares, is not in any way dovetailed with the team or contractor who fills them. In so many places in our town (Valley Road is an excellent example at the moment), these sandy squares are just left to their own devices for months on end to be gouged out by travellers into bigger deep holes. What planning can possibly have gone into this process?
The SPCA can happily boast a brand new hospital, car park and a fresh coat of paint – but still they are to be found at the end of a dodgy piece of road. Please can someone from the maintenance department arrange for the SPCA Road to be filled or tarred or resurfaced?
