OPINION: ‘Lack of support is disheartening’

Become part of a proactive group of people who work towards taking this area back from the criminals.

DEAR Editor,-

As chairman of the Port Shepstone Business Against Crime Forum, I wish to say how saddened I am to witness the lack of support for this extremely important forum. I am sure we are all aware that crime is rampant, particularly in the CBD, and our SAPS members cannot be expected to carry the responsibility for dealing with it without the input from our business partners, good or bad. There is nothing more frustrating than to hear criticism from those who are not prepared to attend one meeting a month where they can have their say and be part of the solution.

We are extremely fortunate to have a vibrant SAPS community here whose members are passionate about their work and we should take advantage of this situation. At our meeting last week, two members of the business community attended and six apologies were received. Eight SAPS members were present, all of whom had already worked a full and very demanding day and then had their time wasted when they could have been home with their families or out fighting crime.

This forum is also available for residents of Newtown and the lower CBD area to the beachfront, as well as our business partners. Please take it seriously and become part of a proactive, not reactive, group of people who, partnered with SAPS, can work towards taking this area back from the criminals. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 17th, and a reminder will be published in the newspaper.
