OPINION: ‘Nobody gives a hoot anymore’

If only ratepayers would stand behind rates committees and demand a clean-up.

DEAR Editor,

I thank you for bringing to light some of the plights in our beautiful area – it takes courage and will to do so. If only ratepayers would stand behind rates committees and demand a clean-up and keep Ugu and HCM’s blatant disregard for the area they are paid to maintain in the public eye, nothing will change unless we too resort to violent protests. Two municipalities with umpteen councillors and office-bound staff who do not respond to emails or telephone calls, it is no wonder we are broke and in a mess.

In this vein, I implore anyone to please take a drive down Cyclamen Terrace in Sea Park. I have complained so many times about the overgrown vacant lots. I live next to one and an untidy neighbour on the other side of me. A tree from a lot opposite me is blocking one side of the road and we have to detour around it. Verges are full of builder’s rubble and garden refuse. I get so frustrated that nobody, ratepayers and HCM included, gives a hoot about their surroundings anymore. What must one do to keep our neighbourhoods neat, tidy and crime-free? And in doing so, protect and increase the value of properties. What hope does anyone have of selling a property that has a mess surrounding it?
