Butthead’s Beat: Hold my hand, I’m dying

Call to pool knowledge to solve Ugu's water woes.

CUT the crap (literally) and let’s talk turkey.

We’re all plucked in one way or another after the 2016 annus horribilis, but that’s water under the bridge (literally, again) and now we have to concentrate on solutions.

What are they?

Well, promises have been made by Ugu, but South Coast residents are demanding more than that and, for once, Butthead is inclined to agree with them.

Exactly what is to be done, not only to prevent a similar crisis which nearly crippled much of the coast over the festive season, but also to plug the leaks which continue to spout ad nauseam?

It’s so bad that one’s almost too scared to walk on a pavement these days for fear of getting a sudden squirt up the skirt.

Also, how do we clean up our polluted rivers and lagoons… and keep them that way?

How do we convince holiday people who went off in a huff to come back?

Once we know ‘what’, then everyone wants to know ‘by when?’

There is obviously no overnight solution, but a solid plan of action and time frame(s) would certainly go a long way to calm the waters and cheat pharmacists out of sales of blood pressure pills, Calmettes, Imodium, Valoid and such.

Ugu municipal manager, DD Naidoo, has already commissioned a thorough investigation and hopes to present a ‘master plan’ sooner rather than later.

Just a suggestion, DD my mate. Butthead took one for the team and was crucified on social media for trying to be fair. There can be no doubt that there was (and still is) a lot of anger out there. (Excuse me while I adjust my bandages.)

However, nestled in between the vitriol were definitely a few constructive comments. It seems there are a few wise old owls out there who have a working knowledge of our water and sanitation systems.

Even better, they have apparently offered their expertise free of charge. Now, engineers, technicians, etc., who are currently doing the job are probably thinking: “So what are we? Chopped liver?”

No! Bury that pride as everyone knows you guys are probably doing the best you can with an antiquated network of pipes, pumps, tools, etc.

‘Many hands make light (water) work.’ Plus, getting knowledgeable volunteers involved in the solution might just restore some faith in Ugu.

Leave the politics to politicians, criminal acts to law enforcement and retribution to the courts.

Meanwhile, form a public/private partnership with those who have the technical skills and knowledge to plot the way forward.
