From the Word: ‘Pray for the peace of Jerusalem’

In a tumultuous world, gaining peace seems impossible, but it's not.

No matter your view on God, religion or Israel, there can be no denying that Jerusalem is a hot topic in the world today.

It seems like it’s been that way for a very, very long time.

In the Psalm 122, David writes about praying for the peace of Jerusalem.

He mentions that he loves to go up to the house of the Lord.

From this scripture it seems it was David’s understanding that Jerusalem was the place decreed for Israel to declare their united worship of God.

However, David had seen enough in his life, and he knew the history of the Israelites only too well, to know that brotherly unity among the tribes of Israel was very rarely a reality.

So he prays for the peace of Jerusalem. He knew that if there was unity, God would be there.

Fast forward to the Garden of Gethsemane and Jesus’ final prayer is that His disciples would be as one in unity.

Very clearly there is power in unity.

It’s obvious everywhere, not only in Christian things.

Sporting teams that are united in purpose usually win; in the work place if colleagues pull together much more can be achieved.

In families, division brings much pain and sorrow.

The first thing to get right is to be united to God.

If you are not in a right relationship with Him, there’s a strong chance there’ll be other disunity and conflict in your life with others.

Make your peace with God, and you’ll see peace flow into your life.

Psalm 122

A song of ascents. Of David.

1 I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
2 Our feet are standing
in your gates, Jerusalem.

3 Jerusalem is built like a city
that is closely compacted together.
4 That is where the tribes go up—
the tribes of the Lord—
to praise the name of the Lord
according to the statute given to Israel.
5 There stand the thrones for judgment,
the thrones of the house of David.

6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure.
7 May there be peace within your walls
and security within your citadels.”
8 For the sake of my family and friends,
I will say, “Peace be within you.”
9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek your prosperity
