MONDAYS must surely be everyone’s worst day of the week.
It’s so bad that ‘the blues’ already start to creep in for many of us before the Sunday sun has even hit the horizon.
By the time you hear that irritating Carte Blanche jingle, you are already wondering where to buy those old-fashioned double-edged razor blades… or a gun to shoot Derek Watts.

A chance Google search even uncovered a web page by a Cape comedian with the title: ‘Derick Watts and the Sunday Blues’. So the sentiments expressed in this column are by no means unique.
When the Monday dawn breaks, the world remains… ‘midnight blue’. (Even ‘navy blue’ – named as such when the British Navy first adopted the colour in 1748 – is sometimes too pale.)
One just knows that the proverbial you-know-what is going to hit the fan at some stage during the day, especially in the media business. Readers have had an entire weekend to stew about an issue and can’t wait to unleash their anger.
To counter this internally, the Herald once introduced a ‘Monday morning blues bun’ to welcome our team when they arrived at work, hopefully to cheer them up at the start of a busy week.
In a big city this might have worked.
Alas, has anyone tried to find a place on the South Coast that can provide freshly baked buns before 7.30am on a Monday morning?
The only buns we could find were baked on Saturday and were rather stale. Believe it or not, the staff asked if we could move the ‘Monday bun’ to… Tuesday!
Needless to say the bun went out of the window.
Then we tried a poster at the entrance to the Herald offices saying: “Entrance fee… a smile!” Our reception ladies were armed with powerful water pistols and given strict instructions to blast any staff member who dared to walk in with a scowl. Our boss from Johannesburg paid us a visit and even she didn’t escape a squirt up the skirt. That really gave us… and her (thankfully) a giggle.
But that novelty wore off after a while too.
We thought of banning staff from wearing anything blue on a Monday, but that would probably have exacerbated the situation.
One of the management team suggested: “What about T-shirts with TGIM (Thank Goodness it’s Monday) instead of TGIF (Thank Goodness it’s Friday)?” Too expensive.
So we are back to the bun. Any early bird bakers out there?
