OPINION: ‘Cheque’ out these bank charges’

I am just wondering if winners of the SCH crossword realise how much of the prize money they share with their banks.

DEAR Editor,-

I recently won R100 in the South Coast Herald’s crossword competition, for which I thank you very much. I’ve been doing the crosswords for years and really enjoy them. Of course, winning is the cherry on the top … except …

I bank with FNB and in March last year, I was lucky enough to win R100 in the crossword competition and deposited the money into my bank account. FNB charged me R40 for the cheque deposit!

I wrote a letter to the CEO and apart from receiving a complaint reference number, I have heard nothing from the bank.

In August last year, I was once again lucky to win the R100 and this time FNB charged me R50 to deposit the cheque! At that time, I phoned ABSA, Standard Bank and Nedbank and was told that both ABSA and Standard Bank charge R30 (which I think is still too much) and Nedbank charged ‘R20, depending on the type of account.’

Subsequently, my niece informed me that ABSA charged her R40 when she cashed her crossword competition prize cheque of R100.

I am just wondering if winners of the SCH crossword realise how much of the prize money they share with their banks, especially FNB customers. I thought perhaps this was a good project for investigation.

Incidentally, one bank employee told me that I did not know how expensive it was for the bank to cash cheques and suggested I request that cheques be made out to ‘Cash’ since those are not as expensive to cash.

But I wonder how many cash cheques would reach winners if sent through the post. On the other hand, my nephew suggested that perhaps the prize could be in the form of a Pick n Pay (or other retailer) voucher, so that winners could enjoy all of their winnings!

Anyway, whatever the outcome, I thank the Herald again for the cheque – the bank and I are grateful.
