Track Torque: Sebastian Vettel wins dramatic race in Bahrain

It's not quite the start to the season regular fans expected.

Sebastian Vettel kept his head, looked after his tyres and made it to the flag first in an exciting finish to the Bahrain Grand Prix.

He’s won the first two races and will be looking for a third at the Chinese Grand Prix this weekend.

Valtteri Bottas did all that could be expected of him and very nearly passed Vettel on the last lap but it wasn’t meant to be, so the two Mercs with Lewis Hamilton in third for a change were on the podium behind the Ferrari.

Hamilton had done well as he had only started ninth on the grid.

Fourth home was the surprise of the weekend in Pierre Gasly in the Toro Rosso, powered by a much improved Honda engine.

He was a revelation all weekend and I wonder if McLaren rue their decision to give up Honda engines?

Even Brendon Hartley had been in contention for much of the event in the sister powered car.

For Red Bull though, it had been a difficult weekend as both cars failed to finish and this took some of the sparkle out of their effort after the cars and drivers Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo had shown so much potential.

Behind Gasly was a very happy Kevin Magnussen who also did extremely well to finish fifth in the very quick Haas Ferrari.

Nico Hulkenberg was sixth in the works Renault and then came the two Renault powered McLarens of Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne.

Next surprise was Marcus Ericcson in the Sauber Alfa Romeo (powered by Ferrari) in ninth position.

The other Sauber Alfa of Charles Leclerc finished twelfth so they were quite pleased with their weekend’s work.

Force India Mercedes scraped home tenth with Esteban Ocon while teammate Sergio Perez only came in sixteenth.

I must mention that Carlos Sainz brought the 2nd team Renault car home 11th, a lap behind the leaders.

It had been an exciting race with many changes of fortune including that by Kimi Raikkonen who had a rear wheel stick on at a pit stop, then very unfortunately ran over his mechanic as he pulled off.

The mechanic is recuperating in hospital with a broken leg.

Raikkonen, Verstappen and Ricciardo were the only DNFs in the race. Driver of the day was Pierre Gasly.
