DEAR Editor,-
Congratulations to Zimasa Mgwili on her excellent article on the front page of last week’s Herald.
She hit hard in her article and it is sincerely hoped both departments take note and perhaps remember that the personnel are public servants.

It is apparent every licensing department is a separate fiefdom with its own rules and requirements when applying for a licence.
At the shabby Port Shepstone Licensing Department, where I had the misfortune of spending seven frustrating hours last Wednesday, I had the opportunity of witnessing how personnel behave towards members of the public.
Many of the female clerks were kitted out in stiletto/partying footwear and cut a totally unprofessional impression.
At this office, applicants are required to produce one ‘passport’ photograph along with their ID. It is advisable to go with a photocopy of this, as well as a certificate issued by a recognised optician.
At Umzinto, on the other hand, applicants must produce three ‘passport’ photographs, as well as certified copies of ‘proof of residence’, plus a copy of their ID.
If you are over 70 years of age, an applicant MAY also have to produce a current certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner.
As in the case at Port Shepstone, to avoid the necessity of an eye test, go with a certificate from an optician.
With Port Shepstone’s reputation as being a place to avoid, many South Coasters are heading further afield to attend to renewals. Some to Harding, others, I have heard, travel south to Izingolweni.
Wherever you choose, remember to find out in advance what documents you will need as every licensing department office has its own set of ‘rules’.
