OPINION: ‘Clamp down on reckless drivers’

Reckless driving by taxi drivers is something that needs to be recognised, acknowledged and dealt with accordingly.

DEAR Editor,-

The Inkatha Freedom Party is concerned about ongoing death of children due to reckless taxi drivers.

Two schoolboys, aged six and eleven, sustained fatal injuries on April 12 after being hit by a minibus taxi in Newlands West, north of Durban.

Last month five kids were killed when they were knocked over by a taxi in Makhoso (near Mtwalume on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast) while waiting for scholar transport.

Children are being killed as a result of motorists and taxi drivers speeding on our roads.

Reckless driving by taxi drivers is something that needs to be recognised, acknowledged and dealt with accordingly.

The level of danger that taxi drivers pose on the roads cannot be underestimated.

A vast majority completely ignore traffic signs and robots, speeding ahead where the speed limit is clearly visible, while paying no mind to yield signs.

They swerve in between motorists in an attempt to get to their designated areas as fast as possible.

Many innocent lives are prematurely lost on public roads due to irresponsible driver behaviour.

Law enforcement must be intensified to deal harshly with speedsters that are robbing families of precious lives of breadwinners and their loved ones.

We must all want our roads to be safe before it can happen. Reckless drivers must be charged with manslaughter if they are found guilty of killing people.
