Butthead’s Beat: Bike Fest gets Margate revving again [WATCH]

Bike Fest has surely revived Margate's ailing reputation as a magic holiday destination. The coast needs to work together now to keep up the euphoria (unlike post 2010 World Cup).

Cheepos… that’s what many South Coasters are… cheepos!

This past weekend saw what must arguably have been the Bike-Fest-of-all-Bike-Fests taking place at Margate. The music was amazing, the variety of food was amazing, the motorcycles were amazing, the Rainbow Nation crowd was amazing, the vibe was amazing… clap, clap, clap!

The weather was also amazing. (Thanks, Big Guy!)

Yet many locals took to social media to squeal about having to pay a mere R60 to get in!

In fact, one post read: “We are locals… why must we pay? We pay rates and you can’t keep us away from the beach.”

With that mindset, no wonder the South Coast wears Cinderella rags.

Whoever dipped into their pockets to pay the entrance fee (and I was one of them) will surely agree it was worth every cent. Apart from the non-stop live music in two locations, all sorts of interesting stalls and the bikes, of course, there were so many little side-shows that intrigued.

Top of the pops was the coast’s very own ‘Oyster Queen’, Delene Starr and her crew, who cooked up a storm in one of the small pubs. Her cooking skills are to drool for, but her showmanship while she and her lively crew are doing it is enough to keep one knocking back their Bloody Mary oyster shooters all afternoon.

(Unfortunately, the vodka might have neutralised the reputed aphrodisiac affect of the oysters. Bed afterwards, yes! Alas, straight to sleep.)

What makes Delene even more unique is that she actually dives to harvest her oysters.

We really owe all the organisers of this fantastic event a debt of gratitude. Even Eddie and Marthie Walker, who own the Wimpy in Margate town, said it was ‘better than Christmas!’

So it wasn’t only the beachfront businesses that scored. Biker bucks were spent far and wide.

There is not enough space to thank everyone personally, but Vicky Wentzel from Wozani Africa, Justin Mackrory, Ugu South Coast Tourism, Ray Nkonyeni municipal manager Max Mbili and ward councillor Dave Watson (note, no political party mentioned) deserve special mention.

As well as all their teams, of course, Wolf Security and the Saps, who spent long hours making sure that there were no serious incidents.

The Herald posted a photograph of a group of smiling Saps officers on our Facebook page.
