DEAR Editor,-
Our country is beset by wild, ongoing, violent protests on every pretext you can think of.
Just recently – conflagration in the Mooi River area again, on the N2 outside Cape Town and I guess elsewhere as well – that I just haven’t heard about yet.
YOU MIGHT ALSO BE INTERESTED IN :
I wonder why those who have very little or nothing at all go out of their way during protests to destroy what they do have – only causing more misery to fellow citizens and degrading their lifestyle, as they will now have to wait for rebuilding of that which they destroyed? The mind boggles when you think of the logic.
I also wonder why we never hear the outcome of the court cases resulting from arrests of the protesters who make themselves party to illegal acts. And this makes me wonder if sentences are harsh enough.
It also makes me wonder whether hard labour can still be part of a sentence. I wonder what the effect would be if those found guilty of criminal acts during protests were sentenced to something like five years with hard labour thrown in as a bonus?
The pattern and instances of criminal protests make me wonder if these are really protests or are they organised by third parties?
Third parties who travel the country and arrange these events, so that they can enrich themselves through organised looting, which appears to be the main aim of those involved.
No one will deny anyone the right to protest within the law, but current patterns around the country only demand total condemnation, total withdrawal of support or empathy for the cause and the need for law enforcement to become visible, publicised and harsh in application of punishment.
