DEAR Editor,-
There are two reasons why I felt it necessary to turn to the press with this letter.
Firstly to inform the community what steps I have taken to have the Transnet property cleared and, secondly, to try to embarrass them into action.

I have established from council officials that the last time they cleared the Transnet property was in 2015 – three years ago.
They stopped because Transnet have not paid the municipality for the service since we started doing it for them.
They also stated that it is the duty of Transnet to keep their properties clean and the bushes under control.
As councillor for Ward 18, I have received numerous complaints and representations from many residents living next to Transnet properties, ranging from crime and fire hazards to unsightliness.
I even received a complaint from Saps stating that the Transnet property has become a hideout for criminals.
I have addressed this matter in council numerous times in SDBIP meetings, portfolio meetings, direct appeals to the municipal manager, as well as the executive committee of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.
The municipal manager arranged for Transnet officials to meet with me.
About two months ago I took two senior officials from Transnet around from Port Shepstone to Pumula to inspect their properties. They agreed that it is their responsibility to look after their property.
They stated that Transnet did not budget for clearing of properties on a regular basis and that they will have to look for funding. They also promised to come back to the municipality with a plan of action.
One month later I enquired about a progress report from the municipal manager, who replied that he had a scheduled meeting with Transnet that same week.
On Friday, April 20, at about 6pm I received a call from him informing me that he was in the presence of the Transnet official and requested that I speak with him, which I did.
I received a commitment from him that they will have a plan of action within two weeks.
Well, no guesses if they lived up to their commitment. Not a word.
It is quite clear that Transnet is in total disarray, as are many other parastatals under ANC control. And the residents of our small towns, far from their luxurious offices, mean nothing to them.
I will continue to drive this issue until something positive happens. I am truly sorry and disappointed with the state of affairs. Hopefully this letter to you will spark some response from them.
DOUG RAWLINS
Ward 18 councillor, RNM
