DEAR Editor,-
Crowned eagles seemed to have moved in, not only in Umtentweni, but Uvongo has its fair share as well. Not sure if this is a recent move, and if so, why?

The usual destruction of habitat by urbanisation comes to mind. Both areas have conservancies and one can only presume there are already crowned eagles living in the conservancy?
So the new offspring would require their own areas to hunt and nest in. Fair enough, that’s nature’s way.
And yes, monkeys do form part of their natural diet as do dassies, duiker, mongooses, pigeons (which residents attract to feeding tables when feeding wild birds) and monitor lizards.
So the South Coast has the right Eco-system, and not only for crowned eagles. These environments are not all protected, so they will move into new areas that can accommodate them.
Let nature take its course. The biggest threat to all wildlife is man.
The so-called over-population of monkeys should be studied by those qualified in this field and not just thrown into the debate.
Let’s enjoy what nature we have around us and live and let live.
