Butthead’s Beat: July sport keeps us sane

As our highways are often blocked with rocks, burning trucks, buses and tyres, perhaps it's better to stay at home, glued to one's TV set to watch a feast of July sport.

Not a day goes by that we don’t hear or read about some sort of protest action somewhere in the country at the moment.

Unless it affects one directly (like when our water supplies are sabotaged), many South Africans are so hardened that they don’t bat an eyelid any longer.

Ho hum… just another burning bus or truck. What’s new?

Of course, flying is a little trickier these days as no one seems to know what gives with our Margate service provider after their main fleet was grounded by aviation authorities and a subsequent Carte Blanche ‘airing’ some months ago.

The only alternative is King Shaka Airport after threading one’s way through teargas and flying rubber bullets, dodging rocks and burning tyres en route to get there. There’s no guarantee that you’ll even make the flight.

Does one blame the protesters who are obviously fed up with their lot (or little) in life? Do we blame it on our colonial and apartheid past? Do we blame it on present day, corrupt business people and politicians who seem to be plundering our national coffers with gay abandon?

Where will it end? (A shiver goes down one’s spine just thinking about it.)

But let’s not dwell on the many ‘negatives’. To stay sane, one either has to start thinking like an ostrich or…

Make a conscious effort to latch onto the ‘positives’, no matter how few and far between.

For example, this July is a dream month for any sports lover.

On our doorstep, we have the Durban July Handicap of course, but all eyes are focused on the northern hemisphere.

The Soccer World Cup in Russia is really hotting up. How exciting was England’s 6-1 win against Panama on Sunday? A hat-trick for captain Harry Kane! Dare the many Pommy expats who live here dream of England lifting the trophy again after their very distant 1966 win?

This Thursday’s last pool game against one of the favourite sides, Belgium, is just a formality as both sides have already qualified for the last 16, but it might be a good indicator.

Of course, it would have been even more exciting if Bafana Bafana had been there. Get your act together for Quatar 2022, guys!

Then we have that semi-South African Chris Froome chasing a fifth win in the Tour de France, the British Open golf, Wimbledon tennis and a feast of local rugby matches.

If you’re not a sports fan, tough. Darling, don’t you dare touch that remote!
