Butthead’s Beat: Stock up on nappies now!

Cold weather, an attractive Croatian president and a feast of sport last weekend might just keep South Coast maternity wards busy nine months down the track.

Round about April 2019, there might well be a spike in the South Coast’s population growth rate.

It was (unusually) way too cold to venture outside for the normal activities like golf, bowls, fishing, thieving, etcetera, so most sensible people snuggled up, either in bed or under a blanket on the couch to watch a feast of sport on the telly last weekend.

Hours and hours of tennis (thanks to Wimbledon’s ‘marathon man’, South African Kevin Anderson), so there was plenty of time for some ‘couch rugby’ too, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

Kevin entertained us with his epic six-and-a-half hour semi-final, beating John Isner, followed by a brave, but impossible fightback against Novak Djokovic in the final. His ‘innings’ lasted longer than the Proteas in their embarrassing test hiding from Sri Lanka.

If South Coasters weren’t rooting for Kevin, you should know this for future reference:

The Anderson family has a holiday home at Southbroom and Kevin has often visited. He has even been seen working out at a popular gym in Margate.

He’s not the only tennis star to visit, thanks mainly to Herald editor Colleen Haggard’s son, Chris, who was a Wimbledon doubles player himself.

Kevin, Chris, Wesley Moodie and several others have often ‘knocked about’ at Southbroom and Uvongo.

Most will recognise Kevin now, but just in case you were distracted by the Tour de France, rugby or World Cup soccer instead, look out for a two-metre-plus giant who speaks with a slight American twang. That will be him. He sort of… stands out in a crowd. Luckily the Queen wasn’t at Wimbledon to hand out the trophies as she wouldn’t have reached his belly button.

As for the World Cup, Croatia was beaten by a French teenager, Kylian Mbappe, but their president was certainly a ‘winner’.

Dressed in her team’s colours, arguably one of the best-looking world leaders, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, was hugging and kissing everyone who came up to the podium. The rain was pelting down and naughty viewers must have had ‘wet T-shirt’ in mind.

Hopefully, Brigitte Macron was around somewhere to check up on happy hubby, President Emmanuel Macron, after the game. Ooh la la!
