OPINION: ‘Weeds and litter choke R102’

There is filth everywhere and scenes like these do nothing to enhance the South Coast in the eyes of residents or visitors.

DEAR Editor,-

The awful state of the R102 is a real eyesore.

The R102 runs through Umtentweni, Port Shepstone, Oslo Beach and carries on to Margate.

At the intersection known locally as ‘confusion junction’, litter is never removed, weeds are not sprayed, the concrete is broken, litter and garbage lie strewn around, road channels are full of grass and weeds (some are almost 2ft high), kerb stones are not being painted – the list goes on.

This issue was raised at a recent municipal meeting, but it is clear that nothing has been done since.

Apparently the problem is that the R102 is a provincial road and therefore the responsibility of the Provincial Department of Transport (as are others on the South Coast).

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality used to clean the R102 until fairly recently when it was realised this was a provincial responsibility, so they stopped and there it stays.

Nobody knows whether there is any pressure at provincial to now take responsibility, but what is clear is that this road is an absolute disgrace.

It is the MAIN road through the ‘capital’ of RNM, yet it is allowed to look like this.

It gives a very poor impression of our municipality – everyone drives on this road and past this intersection at some point.

The actual condition of the road around Oslo Beach is also terrible, including a monstrous pothole that would damage a car’s axle.

The junction at Creston College can only be described as disgusting with overflowing bins, pavements and kerbs covered in grass, weeds and litter.

There is filth everywhere and scenes like these do nothing to enhance the South Coast in the eyes of residents or visitors.

Another huge problem is the number of big lorries and articulated trucks using the R102 instead of the highway, obviously to save toll fees.

But these roads were never built to withstand such weight and residents will have to bear the consequences.

These problems are becoming worse daily.
