OPINION: ‘Check before you donate’

Members of the public should be sure to only give funds to Salvation Army officers in uniform, carrying a locked collection box.

DEAR Editor,-

With the festive season in full swing, the well-known Salvation Army bands will be out in force in various shopping areas throughout the country.

However, members of the public should be sure to only give funds to Salvation Army officers in uniform, carrying a locked collection box.

Salvation Army bands are always delighted to contribute to festivities by playing carols in shopping malls and they must have permission from malls to do so.

The organisation no longer does house-to-house collections, so members of the public should not give money to any persons claiming to be house-to-house collectors.

Any suspicious activity can be reported to the author at 082 9944351 and she will direct callers to the right person.

Members of the public can also make Christmas donations directly to Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal at First National Bank Braamfontein, branch code 251905, account number 50540087604.

Please use your name and ‘Christmas’ as a reference.
