OPINION: ‘This hotspot requires urgent action’

There is a lot of illegal dumping and it seems people are sleeping in the bushes.

DEAR Editor,-

I read journalist Shona Aylward’s article ‘Crackdown on Tweni hotspots’ (SCH November 30) and commend her for it.

I wish to highlight another hotspot in Anerley/Southport at the pedestrian bridge that exits at Stephen Road.

There are drugs and alcohol being sold along the footpath and usually they start outside the bottle store and then make their way across the pedestrian bridge.

One man actually carries a money bag for the drug money.

There are men and women, and sometimes youths, who sit under the trees above the old toilets and openly conduct sales with customers.

They become very rowdy and intimidating.

As part of the community, I urge someone to investigate and observe what happens there.

There a lot of illegal dumping and it seems people are sleeping in the bushes.

Felling or pruning of overgrown trees and bushes to clear the area would certainly help.

Recently a police van arrived and the occupant was seen talking to dealers and men loitering there, but nothing was done and it was business as usual after the vehicle left.

I haven’t complained to or said anything to these people for fear of being targeted or victimised.

Regular police or security company patrols will help once the vegetation and dumping has been cleared.

Please could someone advise or help because it is a scary area and if ignored, it will get worse.

I am desperately appealing for help.
