DEAR Editor,-
Regarding all the negative talk about the South African police Service – the following applies.
During my time in the SAP / SADF, we had the “Dankie Tannies” (English – “Thank you Aunties”) that occasionally treated members of the force with cake and cold drink (or gifts).
This simple gesture made us (as first respondents) feel a sense of appreciation towards the public for whom we were sacrificing not only our lives but also our ‘freedom’ – something that any other protected person takes for granted.
I urge the public to occasionally just enter a police station, stand in the queue, and when it is your time to be served simply hand the officer a letter of gratitude. If you supply them with beverages remember to leave a copy of your ID and to make it clear that this is no ‘bribe’… merely a gesture of appreciation.
I have had, so far, the best service from Hibberdene SAPS, as well as Crime Intelligence, K9 unit, and the Hawks, simply because I show appreciation.
Another point to bear in mind is the “language gap” if the charge office member online informs you that they “do not have a vehicle” the truth is that “there is not a vehicle available at the time.”
SAPS prioritise complaints and if the five vehicles on call are all busy with scheduled crimes and your complaint is not life threatening you will be added to the “priority-list” – which is logical conduct.
There are bad cops, this we cannot deny (and these members should be reported) but to demonise those who put their life on the line is simply counterproductive.
Please respect our officers and show it.
