OPINION: ‘Reckless road hog is a menace’

When you get behind a vehicle’s steering wheel, you hold a potential murder weapon in your hands.

DEAR Editor,-

I just cannot understand why people who want to travel at 120kph from Hibberdene to Shelly Beach or Margate do not use the freeway.

Some stretches from Hibberdene have sections where the speed limit is 80kph.

On December 27, we were travelling from Port Shepstone to Shelly Beach on the R102, which is restricted to 60kph.

Travelling through Oslo Beach, I noticed a driver with a brand new blue Volvo (still displaying a paper registration) overtaking all cars travelling at 60km/h.

Just before the Bhobhoyi River bridge, he starting driving dangerously close to the back of my vehicle, so I switched on the hazard lights to tell him to back off a bit.

As we started across the bridge ‘Mr Blue Volvo’ overtook us, but crossed back over the white line long before he was safely past our vehicle, cutting in front of us and causing me to slam on brakes.

Then he started switching his hazard lights on for me, so I decided to see what speed he was doing and went after him.

When I reached 125km/h, he was still well ahead of us so I slowed down to 60km/h again.

At the Creston College intersection, he pulled over and angrily gestured for me to stop.

I ignored him and drove on up the hill to where the road broadens into a double lane, but he followed and again gestured for me to pull over.

Once again, he cut in front of us and I had to brake really hard because he almost went into the back of the vehicle in front of him.

He used his hazard lights to try and catch my attention, but I maintained a speed of 60km/h and stayed a safe distance behind him.

He finally turned off while we carried on straight. When I passed him at the traffic lights, he felt the need to ‘flip’ me off.

Just a warning to ‘Mr Blue Volvo’ – when you get behind a vehicle’s steering wheel, you hold a potential murder weapon in your hands.
