OPINION: ‘A fond farewell and thank you’

I was utterly surprised by a Dr Seuss themed farewell party

Dear Editor:

I would like to thank the staff, parents and children of Scottburgh Pre-Primary School, for my wonderful send off. After 41 years at the school, my teaching career has come to an end. I am amazed at how the years have flown by and I can honestly say I have enjoyed every minute of it.

I was utterly surprised by a Dr Seuss themed farewell party, held at the Bell and Anchor; attended by staff, past and present and parents (some of whom were past learners too).

Charles Kruger, a past school governing body chairman made some poignant and witty reminiscences. I was delighted that Nina Gould, who started the school with me in 1977 was able to attend and was humbled by being given an amazing coffee table photo album and two Dr Seuss books filled with personal messages from everyone.

Nearing the end of my year, I was further surprised by a farewell ring (or assembly in junior school terminology,) in which the teachers and children made me feel so loved.

Parents, both past and present presented me with a beautiful bracelet with some very aptly chosen charms, which I will forever treasure.

Furthermore, the teachers and children made the most appealing memory tree with each child’s thumbprint forming the leaves. Truly something to reminisce over.

I would like to sincerely thank each and everyone that wove their threads through the rich tapestry of my life. I value this human contact and appreciate that each parent and child brought their unique personality and contribution to my many happy years at the school.

I would especially like to pay tribute to the staff, over the years, for your dedication and work ethic, thus making my job a pleasure.

I am leaving the school in the capable hands of Ruth van Graan (also once a learner) and know that it will continue to grow from strength to strength. I look forward to being a supportive granny, in the years to come. Again, thank you all so much and always remember to be yourself.
