DEAR Editor,-
As a follow-up to my letter in last week’s edition (‘Fed up with the driver’s licence fiasco’ – SCH January 11), I went back to Umzinto last Thursday.
Upon arrival at 8am, I went to the payments office where I was issued with a document containing my particulars and told to join the queue outside.

To my dismay, there were about 50 to 60 people in the queue already.
I stood in the sweltering heat for four hours.
There is no seating at all, so applicants had no option but to stand in the queue, which hardly moved.
There was no supervision or control of who was allowed into the office, with the result that people jumped the queue.
I can only assume this because the queue did not move for periods of five to ten minutes at a time.
After four hours, I finally got to the office where the photos and fingerprints were processed.
For most of the time I was there, only one counter was manned, although a second one was opened – much later.
Inside the room people were packed like sardines – with no air conditioning or open windows.
There also does not seem to be any restrooms available for the public and four hours is a long time.
I can only hope and pray that all pans out this time with my licence because I will never go back there.
