OPINION: ‘Perhaps a petition is the way to go’

My neighbour arrived at the licencing office at 8am to join the queue and was eventually tested at 3 pm.

DEAR Editor,-

We all have a very busy lifestyle and if people have so little time to spare, how are we expected to spend the intolerable length of time at the licensing department when renewing driving licences?

My neighbour arrived at the Port Shepstone Licensing Department office at 8am to join the queue and was eventually tested at 3 pm, but he failed the eye test.

He will now have to be examined by an optician and then go back if he passes the test.

I initially visited an optician to get a certificate (just in case) and arrived the following morning at 5.45am to join the already-formed queue.

I was eighth in line and waiting outside for two hours before the office opened. It was a further 90 minutes before I successfully passed – a total of nearly four hours of my day wasted!

While waiting, a few of us discussed the situation and with a bit of brainstorming came up with various solutions to the problem.

I am sure that if the traffic authority management put their minds to it in a similar fashion, this chaotic situation could be alleviated.

One suggestion that could be incorporated quickly is to introduce an appointment system. People receive a date and time and it should then take half an hour at most.

I would also suggest a petition to present to traffic authorities and am sure it won’t take long to get many thousands of signatures from people who have had to endure this ordeal.
