OPINION: ‘Postbox fiasco outrages Tweni residents’

It is simply a way of creating employment and raking in money at our expense.

DEAR Editor,-

In January 2018, Tweni residents were told that post would now be delivered to your home and if you wanted a post office box you would have to pay for it.

Previously they were free since there was no home delivery.

However, the home delivery system never got off the ground so those who paid for a box got the money refunded. It took 10 months to get the refund.

In January 2019, Tweni residents were told that, once again, they would have to pay for a postbox, as the home delivery system was now up and running.

The cost is R495 (R300 for pensioners) for one year.

I tested the home delivery system by posting 10 letters from the Tweni Post Office at 8am on January 19 to various street addresses in Tweni.

Five letters did make it to the properties, but it took five days to get from Tweni Post Office to an address in Tweni. The other five have not arrived yet.

People are angry that they have been forced to buy a postbox – especially since the home delivery system is so unreliable.

They also have to pay to install a letter box outside their property if they want home delivery – otherwise the letter just gets thrown through the gate.

It is simply a way of creating employment and raking in money at our expense by creating a system that’s even worse than the previous one.
