OPINION: ‘I will keep trying to report the leak’

I was once told by a staff member that it was not a leak, but a 'natural spring'.

DEAR Editor,-

Over the years I have frequently reported problems like water leaks, holes in the roads, fallen trees, etcetera.

Generally I have had no reason to complain about the reaction to these reports.

Recently however when reporting ‘problems’ to the municipality, I am met with an endless taped message telling me that because of ‘high call volumes’ there will be delays in answering my call.

In my limited experience, this tape runs all day and night. I do have an after-hours telephone number for reporting water leaks, but the same tape answers those calls too.

Two weeks ago, my neighbour and I both tried to report a bad water leak at the corner of Sally Road and Lawrence Avenue in Southport. After 15 minutes of listening to the tape, I gave up.

This water leak has been running on and off for years.

Unfortunately for him the ‘natural spring’ stopped running at a later date when the area’s water supply was turned off.

And now the leak is left running again. Water pours into the stormwater drain that empties into the Umhlangankulu River that borders my property.

This is not the only ‘repair’ that has failed – some leaks that have been repaired in Southport fail repeatedly – the repairs are obviously not doing the job.

I will keep trying to get this leak logged for repairs … meanwhile clean, potable water runs down the drain.
