DEAR Editor,-
The recent front page article by Shona Aylward entitled ‘Hibberdene needs help’ (SCH February 1), regarding the sorry state that Hibberdene finds itself in is 100 percent correct.
The response of the councillor concerned was pathetic.

Attacking Pat Symcox and claiming that he does not know what he’s talking about because he doesn’t reside in Hibberdene is ridiculous.
Mr Symcox owns a business in Hibberdene and because of this, he has his finger on the pulse – his concerns regarding the town are fully justified.
For the councillor’s information, I have personally witnessed refuse being piled onto the centre island of the CBD – all day, every day and not only on collection days. It is a fact.
At the end of every month, the town is swamped with folk collecting grants and shopping, but when nature calls, where do they go to relieve themselves?
The railway pedestrian crossing behind the town’s shopping centre has become the toilet. And a car repair centre after buying spares at the adjacent automotive retailer.
It is also the local hang-out for drinking in public.
Protection Services check cars for licences in parking areas, but never bother enforcing by-laws.
Hibberdene is a holiday destination? As you approach the traffic lights into town, you will see roofs of informal trading shelters with a fair amount of garbage piled on top of them.
Proceeding into the CBD itself, travelling towards the Tourism Information office, you are confronted with piles of rubbish deposited on the centre island of the main road.
At the beach parking area, you cannot help but notice the disgraceful informal structure created with pieces of discarded plastic and tarpaulin as a roof covering.
Situated next door to this is a set of postboxes – most of which have no doors and are in a terrible state of disrepair.
How can we market this as a holiday destination?
What worries me is that the councillor sees nothing wrong with Hibberdene and is quite prepared to ‘shoot the messenger’.
