DEAR Editor,-
According to recent letters and reports, many locals opted to take a trip to Umzinto to get their driver’s licences renewed because it was quicker and less stressful than visiting the Port Shepstone Licencing Department.

I recently accompanied an elderly friend to renew her licence at Umzinto, who was rudely lambasted by one staff member who asked ‘why after being in South Africa for the past 22 years she couldn’t speak Zulu?’
Our friend speaks French, English and Creole, so why the heck does she need to speak Zulu?
A colleague of the staff member then offered to ‘set things right for a R100 note’, which she duly refused.
There was no way that she would get her licence renewed at this office, so we left.
Are we expected to just ‘lie down’ and accept this unacceptable behaviour.
Is this not blatant racism, which is the scourge of the country at present?
