OPINION: ‘Day six with no water … and counting’

Why are we given excuses to justify poor service delivery?

DEAR Editor,-

On Tuesday, March 12, we were notified by Ugu that the main water line was being worked on and that we would have no water from 8am to 5pm.

Everyone was asked to conserve water during that period for them to do maintenance.

The water did not go off during the day, however, at 11pm it was shut off.

The next morning we were advised that the ‘system needs to rehabilitate’ and would take another 12 to 24 hours for pressure to build up in reservoirs.

Then we were informed that because of Eskom’s loadshedding, it would take a little longer, but please be patient as the system recovers.

Well, as at March 18, it is now the sixth day that residents have no water.

Water started running down Wingate Avenue last Saturday morning and still continues to flow, with tens of thousands of litres of water being wasted and people have no water.

Why are we given excuses to justify poor service delivery?

Ugu was voted in by the people to serve the people. This is their mandate. Ratepayers are their customers, yet are always given lame excuses for lack of performance.

They can have excuses or results, but not both. We want results.

It’s the middle of the holiday season again and once again there’s no water.

What impression does that make on the person who spends their hard-earned money on the South Coast and is then inconvenienced by poor services?

I do not think that Ugu really cares and it is time that it admits their current level of competence is NOT up to the standard of looking after the Hibiscus Coast.

Resign and give someone else an opportunity to serve the community.

When you are ready, competent and willing, then by all means apply for the post again.

It’s time for change.
