OPINION: ‘Lack of management is unacceptable’

The transfer station is in a disgusting, messy and overflowing state and needs to be addressed urgently.

DEAR Editor,-

This is a letter that I sent to Councillors Dorica Mthuli and Stephanie Breedt recently.

As at today Monday, March 18, at 1.30pm, the Leisure Bay Garden Transfer Station is once again closed to the public because the four garden refuse skips are full.

* Apparently only two skips were collected on March 15, with the result that all have been full since Friday. It’s currently school holidays with homeowners trying unsuccessfully to utilise this facility;

* There are still only four skips in operation. Last year I was advised that Ray Nkonyeni Municipality were in the process of tendering for more skips to increase it to six. It would appear that nothing has transpired in this regard as there are still only four;

* The security guard at the gate is being verbally abused by the public, when in fact it is not his fault as he does not manage the station. Apparently he’s been told to tell people wanting to dump garden refuse that they must take it to Oatlands – this is totally impractical and causes illegal dumping on verges and vacant lots. I thought that with RNM’s ‘anti-litter and dumping campaign’ this is exactly what they don’t want to happen;

The Leisure Bay Garden Transfer Station is closed to the public because all four skips are overflowing and have not been emptied for some time.

* In general this area is in a disgusting, messy and overflowing state and needs to be addressed urgently.

As a Leisure Bay resident and ratepayer, I find this ongoing lack of management regarding this transfer station totally unacceptable.

Why is it that RNM is simply unable and/or unwilling to properly and effectively manage this transfer station?

What can be done to meaningfully rectify and improve this unacceptable situation.
