With regards to last week’s article entitled ‘Beaches ‘trashed’ during December holiday season’ in the Mid South Coast Mail, as a matter of interest and besides people littering at Scottburgh beach in particular, a lot of the litter also came out the storm-water drains and it was mostly nappies – about 200 of them.
We live in Klerksdorp, have a holiday unit in Scottburgh and have been visiting for the past 20 years.
The decision to ban alcohol on the beach was fantastic and everyone I spoke to was also impressed.
When I got back to Klerksdorp and mentioned it to friends, their comment was that it was about time as many people stay away from the South Coast due to alcohol.
They would rather go to the North Coast or Cape province.
Thank you to the mayor, Umdoni Municipality and of course the Saps for making the beaches in Umdoni alcohol-free during the December holidays.
It was wonderful to see people enjoying those days in a relaxed, safe and clean environment.
On one occasion, a large group of people, mostly children, got off the train and were walking to the beach with great excitement. It was good to know they were to enjoy a safe day on the beach without the risk of cutting their feet with glass or being hassled by people who have been drinking.
Please keep the beaches alcohol-free on weekends, as well as during holidays.
