DEAR Editor,-
South Africa’s music legends came together to pay tribute to Durban’s Steve Fataar who sadly died in the early hours of January 18, but not until he played his last concert with his close friend and confidant,
Port Shepstone’s own Reverend Danny Chetty.

Almost every Friday, he would insist that I play with him and opened almost every set with his favourite songs, much to the delight of his loyal fans.
He loved to belt out the favourite all time gospel melody ‘This little light of mine’ and even insisted that we open with this at our recent City Hall debut.
I played many times alongside Steve and his musical genius always preceded him.
His international iconic status and more than half century of musical limelight only kept him humble and truly a ‘people’s prophet’.
I was privileged to be warmly embraced by Steve and his family, his mentoring and intuitive ability will continue to shape my music and ministry and he will be sorely missed.
It is going to be very different and difficult to be on a public platform, stage or church without my brother and mentor directing the set.Steve Fataar was truly a gift to South Africa and his death is a void that will linger on and on.
Various tributes have already been held and there are more to come as musicians celebrate the legendary Steve Fataar and the legacy of The Flames.
Port Shepstone will have its own tribute concert soon.
REVEREND DANNY CHETTY
