OPINION: ‘First day jitters were put to rest’

This week has seen younger pupils returning to school.

As a parent you can face anything on your own, even Covid-19 scares, but when these things involve their children a mother’s instinctive response is to protect them from the craziness that is our current state of affairs.

My children attend a local government school and my daughter returned for her orientation day on Tuesday this week.

We had received numerous messages and forms as to what we could expect, what we had to do and so on.

My husband encouraged me not to panic and just see the process through. It would be okay, he said.

Of course, I struggled to listen and I left for the drop-off with a ball of anxiety in my gut.

It started off with me almost missing the turn which was treated with great amusement and patience from the group directing cars, headed by the principal of the school, who was leading from the front.

I was then guided through the drop-off by a host of teachers and helpers who were friendly, warm and welcoming.

My daughter had to put on her shoes at the last minute and grab bags and juice bottles because I wasn’t allowed to exit the vehicle.

The school secretary was there though, together with the teachers, and my daughter was quickly bundled out and guided to her classroom by a plethora of pleasant smiling faces.

Social distancing was observed and yet the warmth of the welcome was still felt. It was so precious I had to hold back a tear. What a relief.

When I collected her later on she was so hyped up from her exciting day.

She couldn’t understand why she couldn’t go back to ‘big school’ the following day. I would call that a win.

Thank you to the principal, teachers and staff for making a slightly daunting task rather fun in the end.
