OPINION: What is the role of ward councillors in rural areas?
Promises are made when it's time to vote, but excuses are made after voting.
Can someone explain the role played by councillors in the community, especially in the rural areas because we don’t get any service?
In ward Nkampini (Gcilima) we have one mast light next to Mbambi High School and it is not working, it’s always on day and night.
We have been fetching water from the river since 2020, if we are lucky they (the municipality) will open the water for half a day for people in low-lying areas. If you are on a hill you won’t get any water and we are used to buying drinking water.
They don’t even send a water truck to us, you will only get water if there is a funeral and then our councillor will tell people that they care.
When it is time to vote they tell us that we will get clean water, and roads will be maintained but after we have voted for them, you will hear excuses like water is for Ugu, not Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and this road belongs to the Department of Transport. But their motto says they ‘care’.
Maybe it is time for us, especially Ward 7 to stop voting for the ruling party because we are loyal to them and they are not loyal to us as a community. I am sure if we don’t vote for them in the next local government election they will lose.
