Ever had one of those moments where, for example the moment one checks one’s Lotto numbers and they are the winning sequence, one cannot believe what one has heard?
I had that this week.
My fellow South Africans, my jaw dropped and I near to lost my false teeth in the process.
Our Number 1 fellow South African said, with the correct amount of despair/sadness in the voice and shielded eye, that service delivery by this democratically elected government-run party, has not been up to expectation.
I mean they have only been in position of power for 29 years – let’s allow five years to grasp the challenges, which means 24 years of governance and it is only being acknowledged now?
Did he not take cognisance of the almost weekly protest action around South Africa?
He also admitted this failure to deliver was due to corruption and malfeasance, okay, so why are no officials languishing in jail?
But, be that as it may, it’s not something I can answer.
So, let’s look to the front and take a positive out of this because with the 2024 elections drawing closer, I guess the government will be eager to please the citizens and repair that which has been allowed to fall into disrepair because of lack of funds.
Why lack of funds? That is the big question indeed!
Anyway, what with BRICS here now, Sandton has undergone a sweeping change which perhaps will filter down to us on the South Coast and elsewhere.
Homeless people, who were directing traffic, have been replaced by the real traffic police.
More Saps are visible on the street and the road marking are being freshened up with a lick of paint.
Hopefully, the street litter, thrown down by our uncaring and untidy citizens will be magically whisked away. A new world in the morning? Not likely chum. Only applicable for the duration of BRICS, then back to what is the norm for Africa, which is paper and garbage on the streets! Same old, same old.
Wouldn’t it be lovely, though, if the BRICS does bring a new prosperity to our South Africa, creating jobs and giving our pride back to us so that we can loudly say, “I am a South African and proud to be so!”
Pie in the sky? Maybe not. Maybe our country and it’s people just need a push. Let’s hope.
