The recent KwaZulu-Natal ‘Taking the Legislature to the People’ programme in Ugu saw the DA bring the districts ongoing water crisis back under the spotlight.
Earlier this year, the South African Human Rights Commission inquiry into water services in KZN was blunt in its condemnation of the status quo across our province.
The commission also found that the current position represents a violation of human rights.
It also reported that the majority of water-related complaints come from Ugu and that management and leadership appear to be out of touch with the realities that citizens are facing.
The commission’s recommendations included the enactment of firm interventions by KZN’s Cogta MEC, Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, in instances where government has failed.
To this end, the DA has given notice of its intention – at the next provincial Legislature Sitting – to table a Motion calling on the MEC to intervene in terms of Section 139(1)(c).
The reasons for the move are clear. The municipality has failed to fulfil its obligations and to take the steps necessary to do so.
Meanwhile, the Cogta grants for infrastructure repair and upgrade are not enough after 29 years of interference and corruption under ANC rule.
