OPINION: Battle for basic needs continues

"If it's not hours without electricity, it's days without water!"

What in the world is happening to our beloved country?

If it’s not hours without electricity, it’s days without water! How much more of this are we expected to handle?
I, for one, have already reached breaking point, and it’s becoming evident that many others have as well. As a South African citizen (who does in fact pay rates), I expect these basic needs to be available 24/7. And if there is an issue like a burst pipe, smoking power box, and so on, I expect trained people to attend to these matters with urgency…while providing proper updates to the community about progress on the matters.

In my area, we’ve been having a lot of issues with power outages and low water supply lately. Our councillors have always tried providing updates on the matters when they can, and I am grateful for this, but I would prefer if we had someone from the relevant departments appoint someone to communicate directly with the affected communities.

It is sad to read through so many messages on chat groups every day, with people sharing about their struggles for basic needs. It is also frustrating reading through messages where people argue with one another for silly matters such as who should be accountable to provide the community with updates on such matters – that being councillors or the actual departments dealing with our water and electricity issues. Very sad indeed, seeing how community members start bickering with one another, all because of this constant battle for basic needs.

I can only pray for better days and better service delivery. We all need it desperately.
