OPINION: When ‘Sardine Fever’ strikes

A spur of the moment doodle has become something more.

What started as a doodle a while back morphed into a more detailed imaginary drawing of a fictitious beach on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The doodle started as the last, exhausted pockets of this year’s Sardine Run created a frenzy of activity along our coast.

Sardine fever transformed sleepy villages, beaches and the ocean into a feeding, gathering frenzy – whales, dolphins, birds, sharks and humans all competed side by side as the shimmering silver shoals scattered this way and that in panic.

Dark bait balls, throbbing and writhing with life and energy, survival on steroids, decimated by teeth, beaks and nets.

Excited shrieks on beach and boats as the harvest was scooped and hauled in, bounty from the sea. Survival.

A spur-of-the-moment doodle, fueled by imagination, inspired in celebration of this incredible natural wonder of migrations, labelled as ‘The Greatest Shoal on Earth’.
