OPINION: Ongoing sewage problem poses health and safety risks [WATCH]

The estate has experienced this problem before.

The San Lameer Master Homeowners’ Association (SLMHOA) is raising serious concerns regarding the persistent sewage issues caused by the malfunctioning Trafalgar pump station, which continues to affect the estate’s residents and the environment.

Last week, during the scheduled load shedding, the Trafalgar pump station tripped, causing raw sewage to overflow and flood a section of the estate.

The sewage flowed from the Trafalgar pump station, through the security fence, across the San Lameer Mountain Bike Trail and into the Bird View Dam, the lagoon and the sea, creating an intolerable stench and presenting significant health and environmental risks to the San Lameer and neighbouring community, as well as users of the beach.

It is incredibly frustrating that the resolution to this problem is as simple as restoring power to the pump station, yet the issue remains unresolved for over a week.

This is not the first time we have encountered this issue. Similar incidents occurred in September and December of last year, each taking several days to resolve. The residents of San Lameer deserve better service and immediate action.

The timeline of reported attempts to Ugu to resolve the issue is as follows:

22 February 2025: Issue reported (Reference number: C250 223 /H1)
25 February 2025: Follow-up made; no response received
28 February 2025: Follow-up made, still unresolved

As of March 3, the issue persists: The association is calling on Ugu to take immediate and permanent action to resolve the sewage overflow problem and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. The community deserves reliable infrastructure and prompt responses to service issues.

Managing Director, San Lameer Master Homeowners’ Association
