‘Nuturing young talent’

The competition, also under the Wafa Wafa slogan, is an activation and an opportunity created by MTN and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and Department of Education to identify and nuture talent from a young age.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for the Deapartment of Sport, Arts and Culture Amanda Bani-Mapena recently attended the MTN Mini League held at King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.

Bani-Mapena was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nocawe Mafu.
The MEC said the competition saw several schools from various districts battling it out for top honours.

She said for the women’s football, Smero High School took the honours winning R5 000 and a kit while the men’s segment was won by Qhilika High School.

Bani-Mapena said Qhilika High School won the coveted R5000 prize money and a kit.

“The runners-up from both segments walked away with R3000 each and kits. The competition, also under the Wafa Wafa slogan, is an activation and an opportunity created by MTN and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and Department of Education, to identify and nuture talent from a young age. It was also a precursor for the Saturday evening MTN 8 Cup Final. The school teams also benefitted from an assortment of clinics by the soccer legends that included former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo,” she said.
