DA retains ward 10 in Umdoni

The DA bagged 1 508 votes, ANC received 270 votes, while the Economic Freedom Fighters obtained 20. The Inkatha Freedom Party received 28 and AL-JAMA-AH had seven votes.

The Democratic Alliance in Umdoni Municipality retained ward 10 in the recent by-elections.

The by-elections came after former ward 10 councillor, Edwin Baptie was sworn in as a new member of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Legislature.

Alan Cutten of the DA is the new councillor after the party bagged 1 508 votes.

The African National Congress received 270 votes, while the Economic Freedom Fighters obtained 20. The Inkatha Freedom Party received 28 and AL-JAMA-AH had seven votes.

In a recent statement, Baptie said the victory will ensure that residents in ward 10 continue to experience hardworking DA councillors who are fighting for much-needed service delivery.

“Municipalities in KZN under the ANC government continue to deteriorate, to a state of near collapse, and the DA continues to strive to do what we can to bring forth a better quality of life. There is light at the end of the tunnel and residents in the province are clearly ready to usher in a new government in the 2024 local government elections and do away with the corruption-ridden ANC. Thank you to residents of Umdoni ward 10 for once again trusting the DA with their votes,” he said.

The former Democratic Alliance Ugu North caucus leader’s appointment as a member of the legislature came after the DA Ugu South caucus leader, Rishigen Viranna moved to Sweden in August.
Baptie had previously told Fever that he joined the legislature under a health porfolio, saying that this will assist in advancing the provision of primary healthcare and hospital services in the Ugu district.
