Seyisi said the programme focused on child abuse, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, family planning, crime, child adolescent challenges at school, and rape.

Mdulashe High School in KwaMachi under Umuziwabantu Municipality was recently part of a Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Awareness Programme conducted by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).

According to Khanyiso Seyisi, GCIS regional communication coordinator, the programme was done in partnership with Umuziwabantu Operation Sukumasakhe Local Task Team (LTT).
Seyisi said the programme focused on child abuse, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, family planning, crime, child adolescent challenges at school, and rape.

“Partners present were SAPS, Department of Social Development, Umuziwabantu Municipality, War Room (Ward 4), and other social partners. The programme was also a build-up activity to the upcoming Child Protection Week (May 29 to June 5).

Umuziwabantu Municipality Ward 4 War Room Chairperson Nonhlanhla Mphofu who spoke on behalf of Operation Sukumasakhe War Room at the Mdulashe High School during the programme said as Operation Sukumasakhe they are delighted to receive such an informative programme and hope that the children will adhere to what they have been advised,” said Seyisi.

He added that Mphofu reiterated the fact that gender-based violence and femicide cases have escalated in the school and the community at large.

“Mphofu further said that pupils are being affected by the adolescent stage and there are a lot of social ills happening on the school premises and in the community at large. She added that Operation Sukumasakhe War Room is the right platform for dealing with such cases,” he said.

He added that the Operation Sukumasakhe team also targeted schools in the Umzumbe area which included Sibongumfeka High School, Mtumaseli High School, and Gobhela Primary School.

“In the Umzumbe area, GCIS partnered with Umzumbe Municipality, Lifeline SA, non-profit organisation – Jhpiego, Generation Gender, FAMSA, Child Welfare, and various government departments. The GCIS-initiated programme was also meant to be a build-up to Child Protection Week,” he said.
