Outcry over Mthwalume man’s murder

SAPS Hibebrdene has opened a case of murder for investigation.

The death of 27-year-old Nkanyiso Mbhele of Mthwalume has sent shockwaves throughout the area.

Mbhele who was involved in a lot of pageantry work was shot dead in his home in Mfazazane on Friday, May 26.
Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge said Mbhele sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and was declared dead by medical personnel.

“SAPS Hibberdene has opened a case of murder for investigation,” said Mpinge.

Mbhele who was affectionately known as ‘Mr Phenomenal’ was the founder of Mr Ugu KZN Top Model. He bagged the Mr KwaNzimakwe title in 2019, in 2018, he was named the face of Hibiscus, and he won Mr Treasure in 2021.

Explaining what happened Mbhele’s aunt, Zanele Mkhungo, said they heard that Mbhele had gone to buy something to drink at a local tavern where he was called a gay (homosexual) by another man while leaving the tavern.

“We heard that they argued before hitting each other. Then Nkanyiso went back home and told the girls who live there what happened. We heard that he had said he was very tired and overwhelmed after the fighting so he left the girls and went to his room. When he came back to his room, someone appeared and opened fire on him,” she said.

She added that Mbhele is survived by one daughter and that they are very saddened since Mbhele was the only boy.

“We were hoping that he would help us a lot once he found employment,” she said.
Meanwhile, Bazini Msomi of the Ntelezi Msani Heritage Centre described Mbhele as a man who was about the work he did.

“As a centre there were times when we were not able to pay him for his work but he never refused, he would direct our programme as the emcee without any hesitation. At Ntelezi, we have been hard hit and we have lost a very promising artist,” said Msomi.
