Lass guns for Miss World SA crown

June Nhlumayo's modelling journey began in 2012 at a school pageant.

Gamalakhe’s June Nhlumayo is in the running for the Miss World South Africa 2023 title.
The former Gamalakhe Commercial High School pupil said her passion for modelling started back in the days of Miss South Africa Teen, Miss South Africa, and Miss World when they were still being televised for everyone to watch.

She said watching all the contestants on stage living their dream and expressing themselves in the most creative way inspired her to aspire towards pageantry.

“I am in the running for Miss World South Africa 2023 of Carol Bouwer Productions. It has always been a dream of mine and it grew inside of me in a way I cannot explain. I want to form a chain of successful, strong women and men where I am not anyone’s voice but rather working together as I feel they have their own voices which are loud enough if and when given fair and equal opportunities. I strongly believe that my vision aligns with that of Miss World South Africa, ‘beauty with a purpose’,” she said.

Nhlumayo explained that her modeling journey began in 2012 at a school pageant, where she and a friend decided to take part with no experience,

“We never made it but that is one of the best memories and we had so much fun, it did not matter that we did not make it. I then began attending modelling classes in 2016 with Glenamy Models, also got to be a model coach and entered one of the biggest competitions on the South Coast at that time and I was placed as the first princess,” she said.

The Miss World South Africa hopeful said one of the reasons why she would love to win this year’s installment of the pageant is because she wants to change the narrative that is being portrayed and instilled in the world.

“Everyone deserves a fair chance, fair opportunities regardless of whether they are academically smart or streetwise. We are different as people and we need to bring about change and evolve also with our way of reasoning. I want the world to be able to experience different kinds of smartness, intelligence, and a different approach to a successful reign. Where a person who does not have a degree nor a diploma brings about the same or better change and opportunities to the people of South Africa. I want students who are not academically gifted to be supported without a doubt that they are capable of changing their lives and the lives of those around them.

Not everyone is built for the corporate world, being an accountant, teacher, or a doctor. We have different purposes and if we support each other wholeheartedly and with trust, we shall thrive and rise above all standards set for us. I strongly believe that this also contributes to world peace, we can only achieve it altogether,” she said.
Nhlumayo said the pageant she hopes to win one day is Miss World.

She said she wants her peers to know that beauty comes in many shapes and forms and that modelling is not only about the walk and the face,

“Modelling is also about what good can you give out, what positivity can you instill in other young women and other young girls and boys whom I believe are the future and hold the successes of our country. I want to launch an initiative that seeks to celebrate and empower disadvantaged young girls and boys in our rainbow nation. The aim is to groom, mentor and provide shape and a way forward for our youth through modeling. I want to instill morals, values, self-confidence, self-esteem, and significant tools to widen and sharpen their crafts. This is the platform where they can actually feel powerful and also chase their dream,” she said.
