The flaming hot Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) Bunny Chow Barometer Challenge finale will be held at Blue Lagoon in Durban on July 30 from 10am to 5pm.
The challenge is a battle for KwaZulu-Natal’s best bunny chow and the top 10 finalists are Green Chilli Fine Dining (Margate), the Curry O’s (Pinetown), Ramjathans Fast Foods (Verulam), New Victory Foods (Phoenix Industrial Park), Chilli Pot (Waterfall), Chetty’s Take Away (Jacobs), Café India Seaview, BarCode (Kharwastan), BP Pick n Pay Express Arena Park and BP Chatsworth Express.
Now in its 15th year, the Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) Bunny Chow Barometer is a culinary competition that set out to name the province’s best version of this unique and much-loved South African street food which has garnered many fans in the region, who take their bunny chow seriously.
CCBSA’s regional presence manager, Deborah Nkanyani said the traditional Durban Indian dish consists of a hollowed-out loaf of white bread filled with curry, and this year, 39 eateries from across KZN qualified to enter the challenge.
“A total of 13 547 votes had been received. We are overwhelmed with the number of customers who, after buying a Coca-Cola and a bunny chow from their favourite outlet, took the time to SMS and put that store into the running for these culturally important honours,” said Nkanyani, adding that CCBSA is committed to supporting small businesses by creating inclusive growth opportunities for communities and a better future for people.
Nkanyani said the finale will take place at Blue Lagoon, where the champion and runners-up will be announced.
She said the champion will receive a store makeover to the value of R50 000, while the first and second runners-up will receive store makeovers to the value of R30 000 and R20 000 respectively.
Nkanyani said members of the public can expect free entrance to the finale.
