Track Torque: Max makes it seven in a row

The Belgian Grand Prix is this weekend.

Max Verstappen won the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, making it seven straight wins in a row and, with his teammate Sergio Perez giving his team, Red Bull 12 races consecutively.

This race was even more convincing, with a 30 second gap between himself and the second placed McLaren of Lando Norris.

This is the sort of gap that we used to see when Jim Clark held sway in the 1960, such was Clark’s command of the field 60 years ago (when I was a teenager).

Sergio Perez did a good job to recover through the field and finish in the last spot on the podium, in his Red Bull.
In fourth position was Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes just two seconds behind Perez.
Next up was Norris’s teammate, Oscar Piastri, who gave us another fast and consistent drive in his McLaren.

The Orange cars from Woking were strong all weekend, as were Mercedes, except that George Russell was unlucky in qualifying but came back with a very good drive in the race to recover to sixth place.
The two Ferraris were again a bit disappointing with Charles Leclerc seventh and Carlos Sainz eighth.
They are just not showing the lustre that we expect from the cars at Maranello.

Similarly, the two Aston Martins, Fernando Alonso in ninth and Lance Stroll in tenth, have been sliding down the field since their top showings early in the season.
Billionaire boss and father, Lawrence Stroll, will have to rattle his coins to change matters, as quickly as possible, to good effect.

This weekend is the great Belgian Grand Prix at Spa Francorchamps which is likely to be a wet and dry affair in the Ardennes forest.
Remember, this is where Jim Clark set a world record gap, between first and second of nearly five minutes, at the wet race in 1963.

It is a very fast track where results bear witness to the brave, especially when it is raining. Let us hope that it is a safe event.
