Councillors receive communication training
An induction workshop aimed to capacitate the councillors on communication-related matters such as dealing with media, social media and barriers to communications such as fake news and rumours.
The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) department held a councillors communications induction and policy workshop at the Umzinto town hall recently.
According to GCIS Ugu regional communication co-ordinator, Khanyiso Seyisi, the induction workshop was aimed at capacitating Umdoni Municipality councillors on communication-related matters such as how they should conduct themselves when dealing with media, social media and how to tackle barriers to communications such as fake news and rumours.
“The workshop shared information on communications policy and guidelines, an overview of the district, communication induction, radio as a companion by Gagasi FM, pauper burial, and indigent policy. GCIS is currently conducting this induction workshop in KZN and so far Umuziwabantu, Umzumbe and now Umdoni have benefitted. GCIS is in the process of engaging other municipalities in the Ugu District to host these inductions,” he said.
Seyisi added GCIS emphasised that the councillors should not disclose sensitive government information without authority and how they should weigh their personal viewpoint versus government or municipal position.
He said GCIS further encouraged the councillors to familiarise themselves with government communication policies and strategies so that they are up to speed with communication principles.
