ANCWL’s spots for Tolomane Mnyayiza members

Regional Executive Committee (REC) members Sibongile Khathi, Mbali Cele-Luthuli and Thuleleni Khanyase were elected during a conference.

Although drama surrounded the sixth ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) KZN provincial elective conference, three members of the ANC Tolomane Mnyayiza Region were elected as new Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) members of the ANC KZN ANCWL.

Tolomane Mnyayiza Regional Executive Committee (REC) members Sibongile Khathi, Mbali Cele-Luthuli and Thuleleni Khanyase were elected during the conference held in Durban last week.
Khathi was also elected as the ANCWL provincial spokesperson.

The conference, which started on August 4, and was meant to last three days was delayed and eventually ended on August 7.
According to sources who attended, over 1 200 delegates voted during the conference.

They added that there were also about 27 delegates who were unable to cast their votes.

KZN MEC for Social Development Nonhlanhla Khoza was named KZN ANCWL chairperson, KZN Education MEC Mbali Frazer bagged the position of deputy chairperson, Zamazulu Sokhabase was named provincial secretary, Fikile Masiko was named deputy secretary, while Matozi Khuzwayo-Dlamini was named provincial treasurer.

After the announcement of the KZN ANCWL top brass last week, a list of 19 additional members was released by the ANC and the list did not include the three ANC Tolomane Mnyayiza Regional members.

Later on, a list of 20 ANCWL provincial executive members was also released which included Khanyase, Luthuli-Cele, and Khathi.

Sources who did not want to be named told Fever that the 27 outstanding votes could have altered the outcome of the conference as some of the newly-elected ANCWL provincial top five leaders, including the secretary, Sokhabase, defeated her rival chief whip of Ugu District Municipality Matho Shozi, with less than 10 votes.

Regardless of the uncertainty created by the inclusion of the 27 delegates into the voters’ roll, Sokhabase the newly-elected ANCWL KZN secretary told Fever that as far as the new provincial leadership was concerned, the conference has been closed and the results were declared.

Meanwhile, the newly elected ANCWL KZN PEC recently convened its first meeting on August 13 to draft a programme of action for its term in office.

Sokhabase confirmed the election of Khathi as spokesperson, saying that she was elected to lead the PEC’s communications machinery.

“This is a task that Khathi has in the past executed with a steady hand and we remain convinced that she will, once more, continue to play the critical role of communicating with the media and the community at large about key decisions and developments within the PEC,” she said.

Sokhabase added that the PEC resolved that the imperative of rebuilding the character of the ANCWL and the ANC itself is closely linked to the successful convention of regional conferences.

Speaking to Fever, Tolomane Mnyayiza Regional spokesperson Wendy Mqadi said they congratulate their members Khanyase, Khathi, and Luthuli-Cele, adding that as they region they wish them well.
“We hope that they will work with determination and passion for women and the ANCWL,” said Mqadi.
